Buchanan Cares about the Environment

Buchanan Refining has thoughtfully planned and designed our refining operations so that our environmental impact will be a fraction of any of the “traditional” refineries found in the US and around the world. Buchanan achieves our superior ESG rating by utilizing…

  • STATE OF THE ART REFINING TECHNOLGY

  • LOCALLY SOURCED SWEET FEEDSTOCK

  • REDUCED TRANSPORTATION

  • MINIMAL USE OF LAND…SMALL FOOTPRINT

STATE OF THE ART REFINING TECHNOLOGY

Buchanan Refining’s UltraFuels® concept results in significant reductions in emissions versus existing refineries.  This is due to several key features:

1.

2.

3.

CO2 Emissions

Processing of very light shale crude in an UltraFuels (UF) Refinery results in far lower CO2 emissions per barrel of crude processed than average refineries due to the use of sweet locally sourced crude feedstock.

To make the same product slate from a heavier crude, a refinery will need to emit on the order of 5X the CO2 per barrel of crude processed.

NOX and VOC Emissions

NOx emissions primarily come from the furnaces.  The UF will utilize current, state-of the art Ultra Low NOx burners, which are less than half the NOx emissions of standard Low-NOx burners that are typically still found in existing refineries.  VOC emissions will comply with latest permit standards, which are less than one-half of those typically allowed in older facilities.

In summary, the Buchanan refinery would emit on the order of 2X less NOx and VOC per barrel of crude processed.

SO2 Emissions

The UltraFuels process pretreats fuel gas in order to remove SO2. This results in a 10X reduction in SO2 emissions.

LOCALLY SOURCED CRUDE

Located in the heart of the Permian Basin, Buchanan Refining is literally situated “on top” of the world’s largest oilfield. Simply put, light sweet crude derived from shale is produced from wells within a short distance of Buchanan. There is no need for crude from remote or environmentally sensitive regions or even countries that might be hostile to US national interests. Each barrel of crude feedstock is produced locally, straight from the wellhead into a local pipeline that delivers the feedstock directly into the refinery.

REDUCED TRANSPORTATION

Reduced transportation results in cleaner air and safer highways. Not only does Buchanan Refining source its crude feedstock locally, most of the refined products that Buchanan produces are also sold locally in West Texas. The need for rail transport and transport by tanker truck is greatly reduced. This can save thousands of rail miles and as much as ONE MILLION HIGHWAY TRUCK MILES PER YEAR!

MINIMAL USE OF LAND…SMALL FOOTPRINT

Buchanan Refining’s compact, modular refinery design utilizes less than 30 acres of land. Why does this matter? With a small footprint, more of nature's resources are preserved. This leaves more or the surrounding land in its natural state helping to keep the environment clean for future generations to enjoy.
